Sammy Davis, Jr. (December 8, 1925 - 1990) came up in an era when Black entertainers had to be -- to use contemporary language -- multi-taskers. The young Sammy Davis, Jr. made his name hoofing, as so many Black entertainers did, but at his peak had mastered dance, the stage, film and the recording industry. He also served as a model for how to leverage his celebrity, and his network, for social justice. Mr. Davis was the ceiling that Michael Jackson eventually transcended. Here Mr. Davis performs one of his signature tunes, "Mr. Bonjangles," a song which could have been written for him.
